In Psalm 19, David shows us how no man can deny the existence of God through the evidence that is in His creation. God’s law is without flaw and brings life to those that believe in and delight in it.
For the director of music. A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Psalms 19:1 NIV
The evidence of the glory of God is visible throughout His creation.
(2) Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
(3) They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
(4a) Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.Psalms 19:2-4a NIV
Atheists look at the beauty of God’s creation and say, “There is no God”, but these verses along with Romans 1:20 tell us that we are “without excuse” due to the evidence of Him that is right before us in the splendor of His creation. What is the knowledge that they reveal, according to David’s psalm? The knowledge that there IS a creator of all things, that this world isn’t the result of random evolution. It was created by and through the “Alpha & Omega”, “The First and the Last” (Isaiah 44:6, Revelation 1:8, Revelation 21:6 & Revelation 22:13).
(4b) In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
(5) It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
(6) It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.Psalms 19:4b-6 NIV
David goes on to describe the sun as evidence of the glory of God’s perfect creation. It provides its warmth to both the good and the wicked (Matthew 5:45). Without it this world would be a frozen, dead wasteland but through the glory of God’s perfect provision the sun completes this picture fulfilling the purpose for which He made it.
(7) The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
(8) The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
(9) The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous.Psalms 19:7-9 NIV
God’s glory is visible in His creation, but also in His divine revelation through the scriptures!
His law is perfect, our guide and measuring line. By His law, statutes, precepts, commands and decrees we are governed, and God’s heart and requirements for righteousness are revealed to us. It is, however, by faith that we are saved. We can keep His whole law, but if we do not have faith in Him and His Son we are lost.
Our fear of the Lord should be pure, unpolluted by the flesh. What does it mean to fear the Lord? There is fear of His anger and wrath, fear of judgement, ultimately fear of hell, but these aren’t the reasons we should fear the Lord and obey Him, we should fear Him because we love Him! We should fear doing anything that goes against His heart and law because we want to be obedient to Him out of love for Him. What should our fear look like? It should look like submission to Him, awe and reverence of Him and our worship of Him!
(10) They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.
(11) By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.Psalms 19:10-11 NIV
Here, David expressed the great worth that he placed on God’s law and scriptures. We should do the same! They weren’t just of benefit to David in the present time, they were his hope!
(12) But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
(13) Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.Psalms 19:12-13 NIV
Can we truly recognize all of our own errors and mistakes? We need the guidance of the law and the Holy Spirit to bring conviction when we mess up. Sometimes, we won’t even realize that we have erred, but David asks the Lord to forgive even those faults that he has not recognized himself. We need the intervention of the Lord through the Holy Spirit to rescue us from those sins that we perform willfully and find it difficult to free ourselves from. Human effort won’t produce the righteousness of God, ask for the Lord’s help and submit to Him.
May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Psalms 19:14 NIV
It is David’s hope that his words and thoughts as expressed in this psalm would be pleasing to the Lord. If we look to Him to be our guide, to be the ruler by which we measure our thoughts and actions, we will be truly living in the fear of the Lord.
